Tips, Totals and Bill Splitting

A tip calculation is a percentage-of-a-number problem. You can calculate the tip first, add it to the bill and then divide the total among the group.

Calculate the tip amount

tip = bill amount × tip percentage ÷ 100

Example: On a bill of 50 with an 18% tip, the tip is 50 × 0.18 = 9.

Calculate the total payment

total = bill amount + tip

Example: 50 + 9 = 59 total.

Split the bill equally

amount per person = total ÷ number of people

Example: Two people sharing a total of 59 pay 29.50 each.

An equal split is mathematically simple, but it may not reflect what each person ordered. If the group wants an itemized split, calculate each person’s food and drink subtotal first, apply any shared fees according to the chosen rule and then add the tip.

Tip before or after tax?

Customs differ by location. Some people calculate a tip on the pre-tax subtotal; others use the final bill including tax. The calculator uses exactly the bill amount entered. To tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the subtotal. To tip on the after-tax amount, enter the final bill before tip.

Rounding a shared bill

Division can produce fractions of the smallest currency unit. A practical approach is to round each share to two decimal places and assign any one-cent difference to one person. Check that the rounded shares still add up to the intended total.

Example: 100 split among three people is 33.333… One person can pay 33.34 and the other two 33.33, producing exactly 100.

Useful checks

Check whether a service charge is already included.
Use a positive whole number for the number of people.
Confirm whether the chosen percentage should apply before or after tax.
When rounding, verify that all individual shares add back to the total.

Common mistake: Do not divide the original bill first and then forget to add each person’s share of the tip. Splitting the final total avoids that error.
